Overview of the Italian Quantum Ecosystem

The Italian quantum ecosystem is experiencing a phase of rapid development, gaining significant international attention. A recent report from the Quantum Computing & Communication Observatory at Politecnico di Milano highlights the country's strategic shift, marking a transition from fragmented academic excellence to a more structured national industrial framework. Key milestones include the establishment of the National Center for HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing, and the National Quantum Science and Technology Institute (NQSTI) in 2022, followed by the adoption of the National Quantum Strategy in 2025.

Italy’s industrial strengths are currently concentrated in quantum communication, photonics, and emerging quantum computing software and hardware startups. Notable players include QTI in quantum key distribution, QSENSATO in quantum sensing, and hardware-focused startups like Planckian and G2Q. Additionally, the country has become a node for international hardware installations, with companies like IQM and Pasqal deploying systems in Turin and Bologna. While public and private investments are growing, with over €140 million channeled through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Italy still faces challenges in bridging the capital gap compared to European peers and translating academic research into large-scale commercial ventures.
