New Laboratory at MIT Aims to Advance Quantum Research for the Nation

On May 28, MIT President Sally Kornbluth and Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey announced the launch of the Quantum Systems Laboratory (QSL), a new shared-use facility designed to accelerate the development of next-generation quantum technologies. Located at MIT's Building 39, the laboratory aims to establish Massachusetts as a national hub for quantum innovation by providing a centralized space for academic and commercial collaboration.

The facility will house state-of-the-art quantum computing hardware integrated with essential peripheral components such as sensors and quantum interconnects. This, combined with a $25 million state investment, will enable researchers to focus on solving complex, real-world problems. The lab is also set to serve as the physical home for the MIT Quantum Initiative (QMIT), fostering a collaborative environment that extends beyond MIT to include other academic institutions like Harvard and the University of Massachusetts.

Beyond scientific advancement, the QSL project is expected to have a significant economic impact, with projections suggesting it will create over 150 full-time, on-site jobs and support an additional 75 to 100 positions within the local supply chain. The laboratory builds on the success of existing facilities like MIT.nano and the SQUILL foundry, further cementing the region's role as a leader in the global quantum ecosystem.
