Global Consortium Launches Quantum Optimization Benchmarking Library (QOBLIB) to Track Path to Quantum Advantage

A global research consortium, featuring organizations such as IBM Quantum, Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB), Technische Universität Berlin, and Purdue University, has launched the Quantum Optimization Benchmarking Library (QOBLIB). This open-source initiative, detailed in Nature Computational Science, aims to provide a standardized, model-independent framework to rigorously evaluate quantum, classical, and hybrid algorithms across ten NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem classes.

QOBLIB addresses a significant challenge in the field: the lack of clear performance guarantees for heuristic algorithms. By curating over 1,260 specific problem instances—ranging from financial portfolio optimization to logistics and telecommunications network design—the library allows researchers to perform head-to-head comparisons between near-term quantum hardware and state-of-the-art classical solvers. The project features a public web portal with an interactive registry that tracks best-known solutions, fostering community collaboration and ensuring reproducible reporting.

At its launch, QOBLIB already included over 2,600 submissions from 24 institutions, including industrial leaders and academic researchers. As classical solvers continue to evolve, this library serves as a critical, evolving benchmark to accurately measure the progress of quantum processors toward achieving practical advantage.
