UK Government Launches £10 Million National Quantum Standards Network
The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has officially launched the National Quantum Standards Network (QSN), supported by a £10 million investment. Announced by Science Minister Lord Vallance, this initiative is managed by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) to harmonize technical rules and performance benchmarks for quantum hardware and software. By creating a unified regulatory framework, the project aims to ensure that UK-developed deep-tech products meet international standards, thereby enhancing their global competitiveness and export potential.
The QSN focuses on critical areas including component-level specifications for trapped-ion and neutral-atom qubits, as well as structural frameworks for quantum sensing and timing arrays. The network facilitates collaboration between government bodies, academic institutions, and industry players like the British Standards Institution (BSI) and the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC). This integration is designed to align domestic metrics with ISO/IEC standards and secure long-term defense and cybersecurity interests.
Operationalizing a strategy that evolved from a 2023–2025 pilot phase, the QSN is structured around three pillars: industry support for SMEs, technical skills development, and international legislative leadership. With the government aiming for the quantum sector to contribute £212 billion to the UK economy by 2033, the QSN serves as a foundational element to de-risk commercial adoption and attract international partners, such as the US-based company Vescent, to the British ecosystem.
