GlobalFoundries Launches Specialized Business Unit to Expand Onshore Quantum Hardware Manufacturing
GlobalFoundries (GF) has officially launched a new specialized division called Quantum Technology Solutions, aimed at scaling commercial fabrication capabilities for the quantum computing industry. This initiative is supported by a letter of intent from the U.S. Department of Commerce to provide $375 million in federal funding under the CHIPS and Science Act, intended to accelerate the expansion of domestic quantum hardware manufacturing lines. Additionally, the U.S. government will acquire a strategic minority equity stake in GF, representing approximately one percent ownership.
The division leverages GF's existing FDX platform to produce proprietary cryogenic CMOS technology, which is essential for sensing, control, and readout integrated circuits required in quantum systems. Quantum Technology Solutions is designing standardized fabrication lines for various hardware modalities, including superconducting, trapped-ion, silicon photonic, topological, and silicon spin-qubit architectures, incorporating advanced 3D packaging and superconducting interconnects for data-center-ready computing.
This industrial infrastructure aims to strengthen the domestic semiconductor ecosystem and address national security concerns. The company has already formed partnerships with major industry innovators such as Diraq, Quantum Motion, Equal1, Quantinuum, PsiQuantum, and Microsoft Quantum to advance their product roadmaps. These manufacturing efforts are also optimized for integration with high-performance computing clusters powered by NVIDIA.
